Three Lectures on the Science of Language, Delivered at the Oxford University Extension Meeting: With a Supplement, My Predecessors (Classic Reprint)

Discover the mystery of language and what makes human speech unique. This collection gathers three introductory lectures that ask how language began, how it shapes thought, and why language sets humans apart from other animals. With careful argument and historic examples, it surveys ideas about language origins, from early divine explanations to modern scientific inquiry.

Language is shown not as a fixed gift but as a human achievement built through history and exploration. The text compares languages across families, traces possible roots, and tests bold theories about where Aryan speech began. It invites readers to weigh evidence about language, mind, and culture, while staying grounded in observed data and thoughtful reasoning.

What you’ll experience:

Ideal for curious readers of language, anthropology, and history who want accessible, big‑picture explanations grounded in scholarly inquiry.
