"Three Master Builders and Another" is a compelling analytical study of the political titans who reshaped the global landscape in the early twentieth century. Authored by Pelham H. Box and featuring the insights of eminent scholar Ernest Barker, this work provides a deep dive into the lives, ideologies, and legacies of four pivotal figures: Nikolai Lenin, Benito Mussolini, Eleutherios Venizelos, and Woodrow Wilson.
Written during the transformative years following the First World War, the book explores the differing philosophies of statecraft and the contrasting visions for national and international order that emerged from the era's chaos. The authors examine how these "builders" sought to reconstruct their respective nations-and the wider world-through the lenses of revolution, nationalism, and internationalism. By juxtaposing the rise of Bolshevism in Russia and Fascism in Italy with the democratic ideals of the United States and the nationalist aspirations of Greece, the work offers a unique contemporary perspective on the shifting political tides of the 1920s.
This collection of biographical essays remains a valuable historical document for understanding the ideological foundations of modern governance and the personal impact of leaders who defined a transformative epoch. It is an essential read for anyone interested in political science, modern history, and the intricate art of diplomacy.
