Three-Note-Per-String Fretboard System: A 3-Note-Per-String Scale Collection for Guitarists

Three-Note-Per-String Fretboard System: A 3-Note-Per-String Scale Collection for Guitarists is a complete visual reference for players who want to understand scale shapes, fretboard layout, and modal patterns with clarity and consistency. Designed as a clean, practical, and easy-to-navigate resource, this book presents every major key and its related modes using the three-note-per-string (3NPS) approach—one of the most widely used scale layout systems in modern guitar playing.

Instead of relying solely on traditional position-based “box patterns,” the 3-note-per-string system places three scale tones on every string, creating predictable shapes that repeat logically across the guitar fretboard. These evenly spaced patterns help guitarists visualize linear movement, connect scale positions, and better understand how the guitar neck repeats in perfect fourths. Whether you’re working on lead guitar technique, improvisation, modal soloing, scale memorization, or fretboard mapping, this reference gives you a clear and reliable guide.

This book is intentionally created as a reference collection, not a method book. You’ll find no long instructional chapters—just clean, accurate 3NPS scale layouts that guitarists can use for practice, warm-ups, improvisation, songwriting, and technical development. Every mode is presented in standard notation and tablature, followed by a fretboard diagram that shows the complete 3-note-per-string pattern across the neck.

Following the circle of fifths, the book progresses through all major keys:
C, G, D, A, E, B, F♯, F, B♭, E♭, A♭, D♭
(Enharmonic keys such as C♯, G♭, and C♭ are intentionally omitted for clarity.)

Each key includes the full set of 3-note-per-string scale forms:

• Major

• Dorian

• Phrygian

• Lydian

• Mixolydian

• Minor

• Locrian

Guitarists using this book will benefit from:

• Clear 3NPS scale shapes for every major key

• Consistent three-note patterns across all six strings

• Visual fretboard diagrams for fast pattern recognition

• TAB and notation for accurate fingering and sequencing

• A complete modal reference for practice and improvisation

• Improved fretboard fluency and scale visualization

• Better connectivity between positions across the guitar neck

Whether you play electric guitar or acoustic guitar, rock, blues, metal, jazz, fusion, or anything in between, this reference provides a reliable system for viewing scales anywhere on the fretboard. It is ideal for guitar students, guitar instructors, serious hobbyists, and advanced players looking to expand their scale vocabulary and fretboard knowledge.

If you want a simple, accurate, and comprehensive guide to 3-note-per-string guitar scales—with diagrams, TAB, and every major key—this book will become a reference you rely on for years to come.
