Synopsis
The second part of this multi-volume project assembles a series of recollections and debates on the Ukrainian revolutions of 1990, 2004, and 2013–2014. After an introduction to the methodology of oral history, it presents twenty interviews with participants and eyewitnesses of the events in Ukraine, and documents a series of workshop discussions conducted at a symposium held in 2017. In these workshops, activists and observers of each of the three revolutions exchanged and compared their memories, analyses, and evaluations. This volume thus not only provides a comprehensive collection of firsthand accounts of the three historic Ukrainian upheavals, but also reveals the interrelations between them. The volume documents assessments from Barbara Krauz-Mozer, Markiyan Ivashchyshyn, Natalia Klymovska, Vakhtang Kipiani, Mykola Kniazhycki, Natalyia Zubar, Yulia Tymoshenko, Aleksander Kwaœniewski, Viktor Taran, Markiyan Matsekh, Yulia Tychkivska, Leonid Findberg, Yulia Mostova, Oksana Zabuzhko, Eduard Drach, Michailo Cherenkoff, Andriy Dudchenko, Oleg Mahdych, Rebecca Harms, Herman van Rumpoy, and Jacek Saryusz-Wolski.
About the Authors
Dr. Iwona Reichardt is Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the journal New Eastern Europe. She teaches courses on Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova at the Jagiellonian University of Kraków. Reichardt is co-editor of: Three Ukrainian Revolutions: Mobilisation and Change in Contemporary Ukraine, 3 vols. (ibidem 2019-22).
Prof. Georges Mink is permanent Professor at the College of Europe in Natolin. From 2019 to 2023 he was the Chairholder of the Chair of European History and Civilization. He is a sociologist and political scientist, specialising in Central and Eastern Europe. He has been one of the main two leaders of the Three Ukrainian Revolutions (3R) research project which was carried out by the College of Europe in Natolin from 2016 to 2024. He is Director Emeritus of Research at the Institut des Sciences Sociales et du Politique (CNRS - France), Université de Paris X, Nanterre and former President of the International Council for Central and East European Studies (ICCEES), 2015-2021. His research and publications – more than 250 – include books, chapters in the collective publications, articles and expert papers, and are dedicated to political systems, the sociopolitical evolution of these regimes, the conversion of ex-communist elites in Central and Eastern Europe and the Europeanisation of national political systems. He was also a co-editor of the first two volumes of the Three Ukrainian Revolutions publication prepared in the framework of the 3R research project and published by Ibidem. Among his recent books is also La Pologne au coeur de l'Europe, de 1914 à aujourd'hui, histoire politique et conflits de mémoire, published by Buchet-Chastel in 2015 (French version) and in 2017 (Polish version).
