Three Stories (The Use Of A Flower, A Long Day, While The Rain Lasted) By The Authoress Of 'Days At Leighscombe.' John Francis Foster offers three short tales for children that intertwine everyday English life with Christian lessons. The Use of a Flower follows a lily found in a woodland and carried through a poor family's day, culminating in a Font's Cross at All Saints’ Church and a charitable gift to a London hospital, illustrating trust in providence, mercy, and family love. A Long Day centers on May and her elder siblings as they encounter joy, duty, and illness, learning to keep commandments, care for Johnnie, and share with Sister Ruth; the story emphasizes communal charity and the healing power of prayer. While the Rain Lasted recounts Elsie and her siblings on a rainy day, the Sisters of Mercy, and a Saint Margaret tale, linking domestic affection with piety and the salvation-history narrative. Together, these tales model humble virtue, parental faith, parish life, and the social reach of Christian charity in late 19th-century England.
