Three urbane letters from American essayist, critic, and professor of English Mark Schorer (1908-1977) to Harcourt editor John Ferrone, on literature and the ballet, and, in the last two letters, a doleful catalogue of infirmities noted with humor. "Schorer was a man of great vitality and charm with hosts of friends in both the United States and Europe. He and his wife delighted in entertaining and did so copiously. Indeed, being invited to a Schorer dinner party was as if to be swept into the opening chapter of Tender Is the Night to attend a party presided over by Dick and Nicole Diver. Schorer was also a valiant man and met his approaching death in a hospital in Oakland, California, with his customary wit and grace" (ANB).
