Condition; Original Blue hardback binding mostly good, with some rubbing/wear mostly to spine, good clear gilt title. Contents Very good clean pages, Endpapers have some stress to hinges with paper split at hinges, but linen at hinges good. One fox dot to only a couple pages front & 2 fox dots to rear endpages. Good frontispiece full portrait of the author. To front cover is an embossed gilt "Royal Red Cross" medal, that Queen Victoria awarded to the author. This is a first hand inspirational true story of how a beautiful 23 year old Englishwoman, who married Frank 13, years her senior and political agent. This is a very detailed book, with most of the book about the build up from England to life in India, till the uprising/disaster which left her husband dead, her house destroyed and a British-led army decimated! then delivered the survivors of a military column to safety. In England she was fated as a heroine with Queen Victoria awarded her the Royal Red Cross medal. Published in a small number 1891, but was so popular it went through a 2nd & this the 3rd edition within months of 1891. Size: 16 x 22cm Approx.
