Gary R. Simonds, MD, MHCDS, is a highly experienced clinical and academic neurosurgeon. He trained at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and completed a medical research fellowship at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. He also holds a master s degree in health care delivery science from Dartmouth College. Dr. Simonds has practiced at Walter Reed and at the Geisinger Clinic. He is the former chief of neurosurgery at Carilion Clinic-Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, and he originally developed and ran the Virginia Tech Carilion Neurosurgery Residency Training Program. He is a professor at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, the Virginia Tech School of Neuroscience, and the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine. Known for his compassion and broad neurosurgical expertise, Dr. Simonds has personally performed over 13,500 operations, adult and pediatric. His interests have included socioeconomic issues affecting patient care, medical ethics, education of all levels of learners, and the promotion of wellness in medical practitioners and trainees. He is active in many national neurosurgical committees, courses, and societies, and routinely presents nationally on subjects ranging from brain tumor research to ethics in healthcare delivery to compassionate care to innovations in education to resilience-building in healthcare providers.<P>
Wayne M. Sotile, PhD, is an international thought leader on physician resilience and one of the world s most seasoned clinicians specializing in life coaching for physicians and medical families. Over the past 35 years, he and his group have coached and counseled over 14,000 physicians. He is a pioneer in the field of clinical and health psychology. A former faculty member of the Wake Forest School of Medicine, Dr. Sotile is the founder of the Sotile Center for Resilience and the Center for Physician Resilience in Davidson, North Carolina. He consults nationally with healthcare organizations and medical group practices concerned about resilience. He serves as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Tulane University School of Medicine and as a special consultant in physician leadership and development for Atrium Health (formerly Carolinas HealthCare System) and FirstHealth of the Carolinas. He has coauthored nine books, including

The Medical Marriage, and
Letting Go of What s Holding You Back, and he is published widely in the peer-reviewed medical literature on topics related to physician burnout and medical family life. Dr. Sotile has received lifetime career achievement awards from the American Academy of Medical Administrators and other healthcare professional societies.
