Carthoris, son of the Warlord of Mars and the incomparable Dejah Thoris, travels to the court of Thuvan Dihn to proclaim his love to the fair Thuvia, Princess of Ptarth, only to leave dejected when he finds she is promised to another. But the Prince of Helium's troubles are only beginning, for when unknown raiders seize Thuvia, Carthoris becomes the chief suspect. While attempting to return to Ptarth and clear his name, his flier is sabotaged, and he finds himself carried across the desolate wastes to the ancient city of Lothar. There Thuvia has escaped her abductors, only to fall into the clutches of Lothar's tyrannical jeddak, whose legions of spectral warriors have been locked in an unceasing bloody war since time immemorial.

He was one of the authors of The Adventure House Guide to Pulps, and has edited several pulp anthologies, including the Best of Adventure series. His book, Uncovered: The Hidden Art of the Girlie Pulps, an in-depth study of the spicy pulps and their art, was named ForeWord Magazine's 2003 Popular Culture Book of the Year. In 2013, Bob Weinberg, Bob Garcia, and he collaborated on The Collectors' Book of Virgil Finlay, a collection of Finlay's gorgeous art. Joe Jusko is among today's most acclaimed fantasy, pin-up, and comic artists. His work has been featured on book and comic posters, and on the much-praised 1992 Marvel Masterpieces trading cards. Jusko is a recipient of myriad industry honors, including a Certificate of Merit from the Society of Illustrators and a 2001 Chesley Award nomination. Fittingly, he was born on September 1, sharing his birthday with Edgar Rice Burroughs. Jusko's longtime love of Burroughs' work continues to inspire him in illustrating the Authorized Library and bringing the author's creative vision to life.
