About this title

A collection of essays and two novels by critically acclaimed Singaporean writer Philip Jeyaretnam. This anthology includes the two novels Raffles Place Ragtime, Abraham’s Promise, his collection of short stories (First Loves, with two new stories), essays and a Foreword by Peter Wicks.

About the Author:

Philip Jeyaretnam was born in Singapore in 1964 and is the son of former magistrate and prominent Singaporean Opposition politician, J.B. Jeyaretnam and an Englishwoman, Margaret (nee Walker.) He was educated outside the local public system to avoid possible complications arising from his father’s intense political involvement, and because of his mother’s nationality. Philip Jeyaretnam’s father sponsored him to study law at Corpus Christi college in Cambridge University, from which he graduated with First Class Honours in 1986. He was admitted as barrister-of-law of Gray’s Inn in 1987.

Jeyaretnam’s passion for writing has taken him around the world to many presigious literary events and programs including University of Iowa International Writers’ Program, Harvard Law School, The Melbourne Writers’ Festival in Australia, and the Cambridge Seminar. In 1993 he was named Young Artist of the Year by the National Arts Council of Singapore.

Currently, Philip Jeyaretnam is a partner in the firm of Rodyk & Davidson. In January, 2003 he was appointed Senior Counsel by the Chief Justice of Singapore. In November 2003 he was appointed President of the law Society. He lives in Singapore with his wife and three children.
