Tikkun Reader

For the past twenty years, Tikkun magazine has advanced liberal ideals, featuring articles on such important issues as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Jewish culture, and the intersection of religion and politics in the United States. Tikkun Reader is a collection of the best of Tikkun magazine since its inception, providing the most cohesive collection of writings articulating the progressive, left-leaning religious perspective on some of the most important issues facing both Jews and non-Jews today. This collection includes contributions by such people as: Daniel Matt, Judith Plaskow, Arthur Green, Arthur Waskow, Estelle Frankel, Naomi Wolf, Zygmunt Bauman, Cornel West, Daniel Berrigan, David Korten, Deepak Chopra, Jim Wallis, Jonathan Schell, Vandana Shiva, Roger Gottlieb, Fritjof Capra and many more. Thematically arranged essays focus on a variety of topics, including Approaching God, Jewish Identity, Judaism, Israel, the Holocaust, and Spiritual Politics. An introduction by founder and editor-in-chief Michael Lerner sets the stage and places the readings in context.

FRITJOF CAPRA received his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the University of Vienna and has written and lectured extensively about the philosophical implications of modern science. He is the author of The Web of Life, The Turning Point and Uncommon Wisdom. Currently a director of the Center for Ecoliteracy in Berkeley, California, he lives in Berkeley with his wife and daughter.

Amitai Etzioni is the founder and director of the Communitarian Network and University Professor at The George Washington University. He has served as a senior advisor to the White House and President of the American Sociological Association. He has taught sociology at Columbia University, the Harvard Business School, and the University of California at Berkeley. He is the author of 22 books, including The New Golden Rule, Political Unification Revisited and My Brother's Keeper: A Memoir and a Message. A recent study listed him as one of the leading hundred public intellectuals.

Michael S. Kimmel is a well-known educator concerning gender issues. His work has appeared in dozens of magazines, newspapers and scholarly journals, including the New York Times Book Review, the Harvard Business Review, The Nation and Psychology Today, where he was a Contributing Editor and columnist on male-female relationships. His teaching examines men's lives from a pro-feminist perspective. He is national spokesperson for the National Organization for Men Against Sexism (NOMAS) in the States.

Daphne Merkin is the author of the novel Enchantment, which won the Edward Lewis Wallant Award for best novel on a Jewish theme, as well as collections of essays and a memoir, This Close to Happy. A former staff writer for The New Yorker, her essays frequently appear in The New York Times, Bookforum, The New Republic, Departures, ELLE, Travel + Leisure, Tablet, and many other publications. Merkin has taught writing at the 92nd Street Y, Marymount Manhattan College, and Hunter College, and she currently teaches at Columbia University’s MFA program. She lives in New York City.

Jonathan Schell, author of The Unconquerable World and The Fate of the Earth among many other titles, is the Nation Institute’s Harold Willens Peace Fellow. His “Letter from Ground Zero” column appears in The Nation regularly. He also writes for Harper’s, The Atlantic Monthly, Foreign Affairs, and Tomdispatch.com. He is a distinguished visiting fellow at the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization.
