The doctor spoke gently, but his words hit with the impact of a fist to the stomach. “Mr. Bailey,” he said to my father, “I think you need to consider the possibility—the probability—that your wife has Alzheimer’s.” Author Kathleen Brown has been there: daughter one day, caregiver the next. In the first difficult weeks following her mother’s diagnosis, Kathleen searched in vain for help from someone who had succeeded in handling the challenges she was facing. With her book A Time for Miracles: Finding Your Way through the Wilderness of Alzheimer’s, the author delivers to caregivers the reassurance she was desperate to hear: “You can do this. I did. Here’s how.” A Time for Miracles offers help targeted to those caring for loved ones at home. In its pages, caregivers—and those who love them—will find help, encouragement, and a virtual companion for the journey. Kathleen writes from experience, but also from her heart, giving readers insight and strategies laced with hope and even humor. “I have walked the road you walk,” Kathleen tells readers. “I have held a hand very like the one you’re holding. I saw miracles. Believe me—you will too.” “This is a book of hope. It explores the role of family and caregivers and their struggles to cope with the highs and lows of a loved one with Alzheimer’s Disease. Caring for a loved one with dementia requires time, energy, love, patience, and a great deal of sacrifice. However, there are miracles and laughter on this journey as well. There is much to be thankful for as you will find here. The stories and tips can help manage the burden of caring for these loved ones.” —Dr. Stephen Vobach, MD
