Titcomb's Letters to Young People, Single and Married

Titcomb's Letters To Young People, Single And Married by Josiah Gilbert Holland is a didactic collection of moral essays in the form of letters addressed to three audiences—young men, young women, and newly married couples. The letters exhort readers to cultivate character, self-reliance, and piety, emphasizing work, prudence, and virtue as the foundations of a successful life. Across sections such as Getting the Right Start, Female Society—The Woman for a Wife, Manners and Dress, Bad Habits, The Blessings of Poverty, Food and Physical Culture, and Social Duties and Privileges, Holland prescribes practical maxims on education, dress, social conduct, and personal discipline. The adjacent sections for young women stress propriety in attire and behavior, the value of intellect married to virtue, and the necessity of piety to family life. The Married section treats conjugal duties, mutual respect, fiscal stewardship, child-rearing, and maintaining home life as central to moral civilization. The tone is earnest, paternal, sometimes admonitory, and reflects mid-19th-century American Protestant ethics. The work remains a landmark example of didactic moral instruction aimed at shaping the lives of youths and couples through accessible, prescriptive counsel.
