Coloured; very light age-toning and soiling to margins, has at some stage been mounted, signs of old tape on verso and corners, otherwise overall a fine example. A total of 10 engraved charts, were drawn by Robert Adams and engraved by Augustine Ryther for the book 'Expeditionis Hispanorum in Angliam vera descritio, Anno Do MDLXXXVIII', published, London 1590. In 1591, to commemorate the defeat of the Spanish Armada, Lord Howard of Effingham commissioned the Dutch marine painter Hendrik Cornelisz Vroom to design ten scenes of the Spanish Armada to be made into tapestry wall-hangings by Fran�ois Spierinck of Delft. The tapestries were purchased by James I in 1616 and later came to hang in the House of Lords, where they were copied by John Pine (1690-1756). The tapestries were destroyed in the great fire of 1834. These later highly decorative engravings were drawn by Hubert-Fran�ois Gravelot and engraved and published by John Pine in 1739. It is lucky that Pine worried that "'Time, or Accident, or moths may deface these valuable shadows" Both charts cover the coast of part of Cornwall from Dodman Point to Maidencombe in Devon. The charts show wind-heads blowing from the SW and the flight of the Spanish Fleet, with the English Fleet in pursuit. The left chart shows the engagement between the two fleets off Looe. Specialising originally in colour plate books and then atlases and maps. Douglas Adams, joined Tooley at Francis Edwards Ltd in 1964, one of the largest antique bookshops in the world at that time. They worked together to establish one of the foremost antique map departments, supplying map dealers, museums and libraries throughout the world. Every map collection somewhere, has a map or atlas purchased from Tooley's. The third partner, Steve Luck FRGS (1953-), joined them in 1979 and over the years they have established one of the largest antique map suppliers in the world today. Dealing with maps and atlases of all areas and across every price range, from �10 to �100,000. Many collections have been formed or amassed by them and help or advice is given freely, to anybody wanting to start collecting or to those forming a collection. We specialise only in original antique printed maps, from 1477 to 1860 of all parts of the world.
