Toilers and Spinsters: and Other Essays

Toilers And Spinsters: And Other Essays by Anne Thackeray Ritchie is a late-Victorian collection of essays examining women's lives in England. The title essay and subsequent pieces critique how unmarried women are perceived and treated, arguing for broader opportunities in work and education. It discusses initiatives such as the Society for Promoting the Employment of Women, the Berners Street Ladies’ Club, and apprenticeships in printing and law-copying, highlighting real cases of women earning livelihoods with dignity. Other essays profile women reformers, consider motherhood and friendship, and offer literary and travel observations, including reflections on Jane Austen and a panorama of social life from London to Rome and Newport Market. Across these works, the author champions education, practical reform, and the value of everyday labor, while urging readers to rethink gender roles, solidarity, and the meaning of female public life in Victorian society.
