Tokyo: Form and Spirit

Essays discuss the evolution of Tokyo's art and architecture from the seventeenth century to the present and the coexistence of technology and tradition

Several lively and interesting essays by different scholars make up this catalog of an exhibition from the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. The subject is not only Tokyo, but the entire spectrum of Japanese art from the Tokugawa period (or 1603, when Edo, now Tokyo, became the capital) to the present. Works of art are discussed in relation to the exhibition's themes of everyday life: walking; working; home life, including toys and hobbies; and important influences such as sky and water. Outstanding illustrations give glimpses of a fascinating and uniquely presented exhibition. Essential for art history and area studies collections. Patricia R.
