Snedens Landing is a residential enclave on the Hudson River in the south-east corner of Rockland County, which, over a period of many decades, has at-traded a galaxy of individuals in the arts and professions. They came there largely because Mary Lawrence Tonetti, herself an artist and sculptor devoted her life to creating a community where other artists could realize their gifts. Some came to visit some to stay for a season. Others came to reside permanently. They ranged from Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Stanford White in the nineteenth century to Katharine Cornell and Laurence Olivier in the twentieth. The Tonetti Years at Snedens Landing is primarily concerned with the period from 1870, when the Lawrence family first came to live in Snedens, to 1945, when Mary Lawrence Tonetti died. Through personal letters and reminiscences, the book provides an absorbing glimpse into the lives of many of these residents during a period of great creativity in the visual and performing arts. It is copiously illustrated with photo-graphs of Snedens, the Tonetti family, and their works. Isabelle K. Savell was a resident of Snedens Landing for several years (1933-38) while Mary Lawrence Tonetti and her children lived there.
