Apart from a short-lived episode going back to over 15 years ago, the analyses of his production never had the necessary critical detachment nor did they attempt to go deeper inside his creative process. This issue of 'Rassegna' cannot be expected to fill at one go the gaps left by generations of historians, but, starting from the assumption that the questions raised by Garnier are of paramount importance in the chronicle of modern architecture, to which he supplied both the model of a city and its components, it will try to bring forth new analyses and material. It is the too simple image of an iconoclastic Garnier, who with his 1901 'Cite Industrielle' stirs up subversion against the Academie, which should be put back into perspective considering the history of the envois de Rome. And it is his very urban Utopia, generally considered as the 'founder' since it was dated 1901, which should be reconsidered as its architectural form proves to be unquestionably later than his Lyons' designs of 1904-14. And finally, it is his 'Great Works' in Lyons which will be made more understandable in their inner story and variations. Sunk into a melancholy which drives him back to the Mediterranean roots of his projects, once they are being implemented, Garnier seems no longer to be up to the strength of the architectural images of modern technique he had conceived before the First World War: it is also this graphic drifting towards the nostalgia of a southern Eden which should be taken into account to assess Garnier's role in the imaginary of twentieth century architecture.
