Klein and Michael Updegraff make the case for human craftsmanship in the 21st century. "Craftsmanship," it has been said, "is a word to start an argument with," and workshop automation, digital design software and engineered materials have made it hard to define where human creativity ends and machine production begins. Drawing from historical precedent, workshop wisdom and modern research, the authors explore why it is critical to cherish and celebrate humane handwork. Examining the effects of the Industrial and Digital Revolutions, Klein and Updegraff show how the trajectory of technology has a definite and disengaging arc, one that is decidedly not neutral. Chapter by chapter, the authors lay out a new way of thinking about old ways of being: a charge to seek engagement w/ the natural world, connection w/ the work of our hands, and fellowship w/ one another. Color photographs, anecdotes and practical woodworking instruction run throughout. Six chapters each close w/ a hand-tool project: wooden spoon carving, a sliding-lid box, a low bench, a post & rung chair, re-handling a chisel and carved fan birds. An introduction, All the Difference, opens the book, and an afterword, Resolutions for Engagement, closes it, followed by an index. Mortise & Tenon, the hand-tool woodworking magazine Klein founded, published the book in 2026.…

Shipping terms
DOMESTIC SHIPPING:
We offer a choice of media mail (when applicable), first class, priority and/or expedited whenever possible. Choices for shipping methods vary and will appear at checkout (as well as additional opportunities to purchase insurance, extra insurance, etc.). All domestic orders include tracking.
INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING:
International shipping has become increasingly complex, but we do our best to keep up. If you have any questions regarding shipping to your country, feel free to reach out before you order. We will do our best to give you an exact quote.
All international orders include tracking and insurance. Expedited orders generally ship via USPS, DHL or Priority Mail International depending on the destination. Consolidated shipping is usually via Asendia or a similar, reliable carrier.
**VAT, Fees & Taxes: **
Where your country requires, and when under the value threshold set by your country, VAT is collected at checkout and remitted by the marketplace you ordered through. Any additional fees, duties, or taxes your country or carrier charges upon arrival are the buyer's responsibility (collected by your postal service or carrier when the package is delivered). The one exception is the European Union (see below).
The European Union:
As of 2026, the EU has added a new customs duty on every parcel entering the Union. Because of this, we are now required to prepay all duty and customs (DDP) before shipping, which is why you may notice that our EU rates run significantly higher than other countries. Additionally, on orders over 150 Euros, the full VAT tax due, over and above €150, is most often not collected by marketplaces at checkout. We may contact you through the marketplace you ordered to collect these additional VAT fees before shipping.
Typical speeds:
Although customs and overseas carrier delays sometimes happen and are outside of our control, the following should be a good guide (Business days only). If you need it faster, feel free to reach out. Sometimes we can achieve the “almost” impossible :)
