Review
Management Monitor
This book provides an excellent and very readable insight into the more analytical aspects of strategic management. The book aims to strike a balance between theory and application and to this end it succeeds admirably. Most of the examples are from Europe, a refreshing change in an area dominated by North America. The book discusses concepts in strategic management and has a very good chapter devoted to financial aspects. Discussion of experience curves, the product market portfolio, and other matrix approaches follows with the relative merits and attendant problems fully aired. The PIMS project (Profit Import of Market Strategy) is covered in a chapter and a final section of the book is devoted to scenario planning. Each chapter contains an excellent list of references and the bibliographies provide a rich source of material for readers wishing to further explore certain areas of interest. Recommended to all who take planning as a serious management function.
David Taylor, Reader in Management Studies, University of Waikutu, Hamilton, NZ
Too many books on strategic planning are so vague and discursive that the reader is left with the feeling that he is grasping fresh air. This cannot be said of this book...the book contains a solid core of quantitative techniques of analysis which aid the processes of strategic planning...
European Journal of Operational Research 26
This is a fine book, and I can recommend it to most any manager, strategic planner, student or teacher...
European Journal of Operational Research 26
...extensive and up-to-date bibliographies...extensive references to the current strategies and behaviour of well-publicized international companies.
CFMD
...extensive and up-to-date bibliographies...should help readers focus on contemporary publications relevant to their particular interests or circumstances...inclusion of small computer programs written in BASIC...will help readers use certain of the tools and technoques covered in the book.
CFMD
The book is excellently documented, and will appeal very strongly to MBA and advanced undergraduate readers and their lecturers. It can be recommended to practising managers anxious to know more about techniques that have become part of the vocabulary of those in search of excellence...this is a fine piece of scholarship and the first British contribution of its type.
British Book News
McNamee's book is a very good and clear statement of several key areas where tools of analysis are available.
Mr Stuart Bowie, Subject Leader (Strategic Management), Bristol Business School
