The glory of the piano lies in the infinite variability of sound in its tonal masses (even successive tones not necessarily pedaled affect the ear as masses), and these mass effects result from combinations not merely of unlike pitches but of unlike tonal forces, timings, and durations, such combinations themselves varying in sound effect from the continual changing in the physical quality of their tones throughout their allotted sound life.
