A Tour Through England: Described In A Series Of Letters, From A Young Gentleman To His Sister. With Copper Plates by Young Gentleman. This juvenile travelogue chronicles a constellated journey, told in letters addressed to his sister Louisa, as a father and son voyage from Oxford toward the southwest, the Isle of Wight, and beyond, extending north to Bath, Bristol, Gloucester, Cheltenham, and eventually London and Cambridge. The narrator records landscapes, antiquities, and urban life with candid curiosity, blending natural description with sketches of castles, abbeys, and ruins such as Stonehenge and Wilton House, and occasional historical notes (wars, royal visits, ancient roads). He also reflects on health and the comforts of travel, the duties of family affection, and the pleasures and perils of long journeys, often punctuating prose with verse and moral observation. Accompanied by copper-plate illustrations, the revised second edition aims to please mainly a juvenile and family readership, offering a window into early 19th-century English tourism, topography, and taste. The work reveals how Britons of the period perceived their own landscapes, antiquities, and cultural heritage.
