This is a splendid book, with masses of information for the tourist within its bright blue and gilt cloth boards: 160 double column pages, probably about 80 landscape engravings, several localised maps, drawn specially for this edition, "free from the distracted crowdedness . . of delineation which belong to a fully featured map", Lists of hotels; hydropathic, temperance and railways, and in the approximately 50 pages of advertising, the tourist could find out all about suitable clothing and where to find such palliatives as chlorodyne and macassar oil. By this time railway travel was very much the way to go, and Scotland had many scenic routes. The ornate gilt lettered upper board has typo "hand Guide" for Handy guide (in text).
