Toy Dogs - Their Points and Management in Health and Disease

The toy breeds, handled by a qualified vet rather than a fancier - points and management, in health and in sickness.

Frank Townend Barton was a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and veterinary adviser to the gamekeepers' press, and he wrote for owners who wanted the medicine as well as the mystique. Toy Dogs - Their Points and Management in Health and Disease is one of a matched Edwardian series with his Sporting Dogs and Non-Sporting Dogs, and it applies the same formula: the points of each breed, the practical business of kennel and household management, and a professional account of the ailments a small dog is heir to.

It catches the toy breeds at the moment of their greatest fashion in London, and it remains one of the more clear-eyed guides of its period.
