"From Trackway to Turnpike: An Illustration From East Devon" provides a comprehensive historical analysis of the evolution of transport and road infrastructure in a specific and vital corner of South West England. This study traces the development of travel routes from primitive prehistoric trackways and established Roman roads through to the sophisticated turnpike systems of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

By narrowing the focus to East Devon, Gilbert Sheldon offers a vivid illustration of how landscape, commerce, and social needs dictated the growth of the English road network. The work examines the engineering challenges, legislative changes, and economic shifts that accompanied the transition from local paths to major thoroughfares. It serves as an essential resource for those interested in British local history, historical geography, and the broader narrative of industrial and social progress. Sheldon's meticulous research highlights the enduring importance of these transit corridors in shaping regional identity and facilitating the movement of people and goods across the centuries.
