Im zeitgen�ssischen Ozeanien spielen die Beziehungen zwischen Tradition, Identit�t und Wandel eine wichtige Rolle, insbesondere in der Rhetorik gegenw�rtiger politischer Diskurse. Das dem Begriff Tradition inh�rente Verh�ltnis zur Vergangenheit ist stark vom jeweiligen kolonialen Umgang mit der indigenen Kultur gepr�gt und schl�gt sich in den gegenw�rtigen Konstruktionen von Tradition nieder. Aus einer vom Autor bevorzugten konstruktivistischen Perspektive betrachtet, ist Tradition stets als selektive Darstellung vergangener kultureller Praktiken zu verstehen, die von den Akteuren den gegenw�rtigen Kontexten entsprechend aufgewertet, beibehalten oder zur�ckgewiesen werden. Die starke soziale Hierarchisierung, besonders die Privilegierung indigener politischer Eliten schlie�t einen Gro�teil der Bev�lkerung Fijis von einer aktiven politischen Teilnahme aus. Angesichts der andauernden politischen Unruhen seit dem Wahlsieg einer multiethnischen Koalition im Jahr 1987 und den darauffolgenden Milit�rputschen durch fijianische Nationalisten, beherrschen die interethnischen Spannungen auch weiterhin die politischen Diskurse in Fiji. Im Jahr 2000 kam es erneut zu einem nationalistischen Putsch mit milit�rischer Unterst�tzung, der eine demokratisch gew�hlte multiethnische Regierung gewaltsam ihres Amtes enthob und dessen Folgen bis heute die Aufmerksamkeit der internationalen �ffentlichkeit erwecken. Im Zusammenhang der interethnischen Spannungen zwischen Fijianern und Indo-Fijianern betont die gegenw�rtige Konstruktion fijianischer Tradition eindeutig die Kontinuit�t mit der (kolonialen) Vergangenheit, wodurch die Privilegierung der indigenen Eliten gegen�ber den Machtanspr�chen der indo-fijianischen, aber auch gegen�ber der breiten Masse der indigenen Bev�lkerung legitimiert wird. Martin Rode, M.A. wurde 1983 in Wilhelmshaven geboren. Sein Studium der F�cher Ethnologie und P�dagogik an der Georg-Ausgust-Universit�t G�ttingen schloss der Autor im Jahre 2010 mit dem akademischen Grad des Magister Artium erfolgreich ab. W�hrend seines Studiums engagierte er sich in der Ethnologischen Sammlung der Universit�t G�ttingen und erwarb weitreichende praktische Kenntnisse in der Museumsethnologie. Bereits w�hrend seines Studiums entwickelte der Autor ein besonderes Interesse an den komplexen politischen Zusammenh�ngen im regionalen Raum Ozeanien.
