Castilla, 1360. El rey Pedro I de Castilla, el Justiciero para unos, el Cruel para otros, esta empenado en una lucha contra Aragon y contra su hermanastro, Enrique de Trastamara. Pedro sabe que en sus filas hay un traidor: uno de los suyos, de sus intimos, de aquellos en los que mas confia. Uno de cinco. Descubrirlo es vital. Pero el unico hombre que puede revelarle la identidad del traidor, Martin de Utiel, ha muerto.
