Grade 3-6 A superb marriage of stunningly sharp color photographs and descriptive text that depicts the life cycle of the red fox. Glimpses of new-born pups reveal several small pink mouths and dark brown fur wrapped within the watchful vixens' encircling, protective body. Later photos show small canine teeth and the blue eyes that will later turn to a honey color in the adult. It's better by far than either Eberle's Foxes Live Here (Doubleday, 1966; o.p.) or Hess' Foxes in the Woodland (Scribners, 1966; o.p.) in both information and illustrations. While Ahlstrom's The Foxes (Crestwood, 1983; o.p.) is in color and provides some factual information, it devotes only five pages to the red fox.Charlene J. Lenzen, Hales Corners Lutheran School, Wis.
