The Transitory Glory of the World, and the Instability of Human Greatness, a Sermon on the Day of the Interment of Princess Charlotte Augusta

The Transitory Glory Of The World, And The Instability Of Human Greatness, A Sermon On The Day Of The Interment Of Princess Charlotte Augusta by Thomas Jervis. This sermon, preached in Mill-Hill Chapel, Leeds, on the day of the interment of Princess Charlotte Augusta, daughter of George, Prince of Wales, offers a meditation on the transience of worldly power and the brevity of life. Jervis argues that the fashion of this world passes away and urges Christians to place their trust in God rather than in empires, monuments, or human greatness. The discourse contrasts the temporary splendor of princes and nations with the enduring virtues of private life, notably Charlotte's domestic virtues, charity, and benevolence. It reflects on national mourning, succession, and providence, and exhorts repentance, humility, and a virtuous life as the true, lasting riches. The sermon situates the Princess's untimely death within a providential frame, seeking consolation for the nation and guidance for public virtue.
