Late 19th century hand-tinted stereoview. Number 162 in Joseph Collier s Clear Creek Series. No date, but produced between 1878 and 1886 based on the studio address. Tan cardboard mount measures approximately 7 x 4 inches. Verso has a gray paper label with the series number, image title, and caption. Photographer imprint is printed on the mount below the label. Light scratching to image; minor wear to edge of mount; some soiling, mostly to verso; chip missing from corner of label. Overall, good condition. Joseph Collier (1836-1910) was born in Scotland and came to Colorado in 1871. He operated a studio in Central City for seven years before moving to Denver where he worked until his death in 1910. Collier earned a reputation for his stereoviews of Colorado landscapes and his great-great-grandson Grant Collier has helped keep his legacy alive by recreating some of his most iconic photos. (Mautz 191). This view offers a glimpse into life in a mining camp in Colorado s Clear Creek County. The caption reads, "In this picture is seen the sure-footed jacks, loaded with all kinds of merchandise, waiting for the first kick or blow to start them on their trip to the silver mines, located on the tops of the high mountains.
