Trauma and Rituals of Exile: Rituals of Expulsion and the Construction of the Self in the Spaces of Europe and Eretz Israel

In this groundbreaking scholarly work, Ḥaviva Pedaya offers a profound investigation into exile as a complex ritual practice, transcending traditional theological interpretations. Moving beyond simplistic notions of displacement, the book reveals exile as a multifaceted symbolic experience that fundamentally shapes individual and collective identity.
Drawing from an interdisciplinary framework, Pedaya traces exile rituals from medieval Jewish contexts to modern transformations, analyzing how walking becomes a powerful metaphorical practice of self-discovery and cultural negotiation. The study challenges readers to reconsider exile not as a static condition, but as a generative ritual that continuously reshapes consciousness. Bridging theological scholarship, cultural theory, and historical analysis, the book provides a sophisticated lens for understanding human experiences of displacement. It demonstrates how ritualized wandering evolves from a punishment to a complex symbolic space of potential redemption, revealing the intricate relationships between physical movement and spiritual transcendence.
Essential reading for scholars in religious studies and cultural anthropology, Pedaya’s work offers an unprecedented exploration of exile as a dynamic, meaningful practice that reimagines displacement as a powerful mechanism of spiritual and cultural understanding.
