Rebound in marbled boards with leather spine (5 raised bands and gilt title) and corners (half-leather) to a high standard. Occasional minor foxing, faint damp mark to lower margin of several pages. Small bumps to top corners, and bottom front corner a little rubbed. A very pleasing copy, with generous wide margins, of this early 19th century account of China in which " it is attempted to appreciate the rank that this extraordinary empire may be considered to hold in the scale of civilized nations". Barrow was private secretary to the Earl of Macartney and one of his suite as Ambassador from the King of Great Britain to the Empire of China. Size: 4to.
