Fold out maps. 151 illustrations. Scattered foxing throughout. Edward Daniel Clarke was a noted English traveler, antiquarian and mineralogist. Clarke traversed Denmark, Sweden, Lapland, part of Finland, and Norway in 1799. In 1800 he ventured on into St. Petersburg, Russia and continued into Siberia and Taganrok on the Sea of Azov. He writes extensively of the Cossacks and Calmucs. Two artists, Lusieri and Preaux accompanied him on his journeys. Clarke's journeys continued through Circassia and he searched for Troy in 1801 (see Schliemann, Illios, Ch. iv). He then turned his attention to Ottoman possessions, Rhodes, Cyprus, Greece, Egypt, and Jerusalem.
