1857 New York, 1st US edn, 3 vol, 657pp, 709pp, 800pp, 200 drawings and a fold out map. Originally published in German, (Gotha 1857-8), this is one of the most important works on African exploration. On 23 March 1850, Barth, German geographer and historian, joined the British expedition headed by James Richardson (explorer and anti-slaver) setting out from Tripoli across Sahara. The main goal for the expedition was to explore Lake Chad in sub-Saharan Central Africa. Richardson died not far from their goal and Barth was then designated as leader of the expedition. This narrative contains a detailed record of his travels and of the countries and tribes along the route with a special interest in regional economics and the impact of slave trade. Rebound in 3/4 leather, marbled boards and end papers. Leather scuffed. Seller Inventory # 004967
