Il y a beaucoup de ces noms sans doute qui appartiennent à l'histoire générale et qui sont familiers à ceux qui sont un peu instruits, mais il en est beaucoup d'autres aussi qui appartiennent à l'histoire locale et qui ne disent rien, même à des esprits cultivés. Pourquoi dès lors ne pas chercher à faire connaître, à vulgariser même, la raison de ces appellations On ne s'imagine pas tout ce qu'on peut apprendre dans ce livre des rues.Ce travail, on l'a tenté plusieurs fois déjà, mais il n'a jamais été poussé à bout; même les plus récents ouvrages sont incomplets. Les anciens travaux de Cochard et de Bréghot du Lut, très utiles pour la partie qu'ils traitent, ne peuvent cependant plus guère être cités. Un très grand nombre de rues, citées par eux, ou ont disparu, ou ont changé de nom; de plus, ils ne disent rien ou presque rien des trois grands faubourgs de Vaise, de la Croix-Rousse et de la Guillotière. M. Steyert, il y a quelque vingt ans, en 1879, a publié, dans le Nouvelliste, le commencement d'un travail semblable; procédant par ordre alphabétique, il s'est arrêté au mot Bichat ou Blanchet; il a fait aussi, sur le Changement des noms de rues, un autre travail plus facile à consulter, mais qui, on le comprend, n'est que partiel. À une époque plus récente, M. Aug. Bleton, dans le Supplément littéraire du Lyon Républicain, et M. Félix Desvernay, dans le Supplément illustré du Progrès, ont recommencé ce même travail; ces travaux sont pleins de mérites, mais outre qu'ils ne sont pas complets, il est très difficile de se les procurer ou même de les consulter.Un ouvrage nouveau, actuel, complet, facile à consulter, était donc nécessaire. Je dis nouveau, parce que sous la forme de livre, nous n'avons que nos vénérables anciens auteurs, qui parlent d'une époque où Lyon avait une toute autre physionomie; actuel, parce qu'on ne s'imagine pas quelle mobilité il y a dans cette question des noms de rues; aujourd'hui ne ressemble pas à hier, et c'est d'aujourd'hui que j'ai voulu parler, mais cependant je me garderai bien de négliger les anciens souvenirs que je trouverai sur mon chemin; complet, ici je dois donner une simple explication: j'ai dû m'imposer des limites, sous peine de tomber dans l'arbitraire; je me suis borné à parler des rues qui sont à l'intérieur de l'octroi, je n'en franchis pas les barrières; si je l'avais fait, je ne vois ni où ni pourquoi je me serais arrêté, et j'aurais dû parler de Montchat, de Monplaisir, de Villeurbanne, de la Mulatière, etc.; il me semble bien que c'est sortir de Lyon; mais à l'intérieur des barrières, je crois bien n'avoir oublié aucune rue; enfin facile à consulter, c'est pourquoi j'ai choisi l'ordre alphabétique, moins logique peut-être que certains autres groupements, mais assurément plus pratique.
