This seventeenth?century work surveys and resolves a range of ecclesiastical controversies that dominated the era, including questions of ministry and ordination, the nature and authority of church officers, and the relationship between civil and religious powers. Gillespie defends a perpetual, scripturally grounded ministry and the right of congregations to choose and approve church officers, while arguing for the necessity of ordination and the laying on of hands as part of a proper call to the ministry. He treats Prophets and Evangelists as distinct from ordinary ministers, debates uniformity in worship, infant baptism, and the use and limits of church covenants, and engages with the larger debate over “new lights” versus traditional orthodoxy.
