A Treatise on Problems of Maxima and Minima, Solved by Algebra (Classic Reprint)

Discover a historical approach to solving maxima and minima with algebra.

This 1850 treatise shows how Ramchundra develops methods to find greatest and least values of variable quantities without relying on differential calculus.

Presented as a compact survey of problems, the work walks through solutions using simple, quadratic, cubic, and higher-degree equations. It explains two independent techniques and presents the author’s new method, aiming to help students who are not yet proficient in Differential Calculus. The text also compiles about 130 problems drawn from notable works in algebra and calculus, with definitions, formulae, and propositions to support study. While printed in Calcutta, the book aspires to assist mathematical learners in India and Europe, acknowledging occasional printing errors.

What you will experience:

• A structured progression from basic to advanced maxima/minima problems
• Methods for reducing problems to quadratic, cubic, and higher-degree forms
• Context on how these techniques fit with algebra and early calculus
• A supplement addressing general equation patterns and quick problem-solving ideas

Ideal for readers of mathematical history and students seeking practical, non-calculus approaches to optimization challenges.
