Nicholson (1765-1844) was a Scottish architect, mathematician and engineer. Although he received little to no formal training he authored several important theoretical treatises including one on the skew arch, nearly thirty books on architecture, algebra, mathematics and carpentry, and developed several draughstman's instruments including a centrolinead and a cyclograph. This edition contains 62 plates (most double sided) accompanied by a detailed description of each. Original 3/4 leather over marbled boards. Heavy wear and chafing to boards and board edges, spine and spine joints heavily rubbed, previous owners names on fep (one of which is crossed out) one signature proud, spine reset, but a sound copy of a scarce book. OCLC locates just two copies-one in North America (California State Library San Francisco), and one in Edinburgh.
