Treaty-Making Power (Hardback or Cased Book)

“Treaty-Making Power: Slavery and the Race Problem in the South” examines the legal and social complexities surrounding slavery and race relations in the United States, particularly in the aftermath of the Civil War. William Henry Fleming delves into the constitutional aspects of these issues, referencing key amendments such as the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth, and landmark cases like Dred Scott. The book explores the concept of 'white slavery, ' the influence of figures like Alexander Stephens, and the ongoing struggle for suffrage.

Fleming critically analyzes the role of the Supreme Court, the concept of 'reserved powers, ' and various legal mechanisms, including the 'Grandfather clause, ' used to perpetuate white supremacy. Through detailed examination and historical context, this work sheds light on the enduring challenges of race and equality in American society, making it essential reading for anyone interested in understanding the legal and social history of the American South.
