Gr. 3^-5. Like the other books in the Backyard Nature Study series, this offers nature appreciation as well as information. Pine, a professional gardener and freelance writer, speaks of trees as "the friendly giants of the earth" and even ventures that they "seem to share our thoughts and dreams." Although this approach may put off readers seeking just the facts, the book is also informative, in a general way, about such matters as roots, leaves, cones, nuts, seeds, and photosynthesis. Individual chapters focus on seven species: the ginkgo, maple, oak, ailanthus, willow, sycamore, and pine. Attractive oil paintings illustrate the text. In keeping with the author's approach, the artwork is never diagrammatic but depicts handsome trees in city and country settings, as well as details of leaves, nuts, and the like.
