Book by Brough, Sherman, Weber, Darrell J.
About the Author:
When asked how he became interested in trees, Sherman Brough recalls, in his early school years, being taken on short field trips to visit trees in his community. From that time on, trees have always fascinated and excited him. He always wanted to learn more about them and interest others in trees.
Dr. Brough, a native of Nephi, UT, earned Botany degrees from Utah State University (B.S.), University of Washington (M.S.), and the University of British Columbia (Ph.D.). He taught at Olympia High School in Washington state for seven years before being invited to teach at the University of British Columbia. He continued the method developed in Olympia for introducing students to trees through "learning keys". That became the basis for his successful book Wild Trees of British Columbia. He has taught tree appreciation, through activities and field work, to literally thousands of prospective teachers. He is currently Professor Emeritus at U.B.C., retiring after 28 years of teaching and supervising student teachers in Biology and Elementary School Science. He now resides in Sandy, UT, continues his research in Fungi and Lichens, and enjoys photography and gardening.
Darrell Weber became very familiar with trees as a smoke jumper during his college days at the University of Idaho as he fought forest fires in the remote areas of central Idaho during the summers. This experience along with his previous interest in plants prepared him well to continue graduate studies at theUniversity of California at Davis where he received his Ph.D. degree in Plant Pathology. He is interested in plant diseases, and plant products. He has studied several diseases of trees, and his current research is on the Die-off of Utah Junipers.
Dr. Weber was born in Rigby, ID and completed his public schooling there. He completed post doctoral studies at the University of Wisconsin before being appointed in the Department of Botany and Range Science at Brigham Young University. He holds the rank of Professor and has been involved in teaching and research for 28 years. He resides in Orem, UT and is an avid fruit grower.
