It describes the cycle of full-page images as an especially fitting subject for the painters in their mature years, while noting that its creation would have depended both on their choice and on the approval of their patron, the Duke of Berry. The calendar offered the brothers a wealth of artistic possibilities. | The book also places the Limbourgs' work in relation to Peter Bruegel, described as their artistic heir, whose panels of the Seasons were painted about 150 years later. It considers the exceptional fame of the calendar and the wider cycle, despite the manuscript being kept closed in a library rather than displayed publicly. Long familiar through reproductions, the miniatures are discussed in light of how those reproductions can obscure their subtle light and colour and their precise detail. (OS).…
