Draper was charged with libel for distributing a statement against a witness in a trial against his superior officer, General Sir Thomas Picton. A distinguished but controversial general, Picton was accused of using torture while serving as the military governor of Trinidad, charges that were dismissed. Draper claimed that Sullivan, a colonial official, lied under oath. Draper lost his case and served a three-month sentence, but went on to have a distinguished career as an officer and civil servant in Mauritius.
