An Unrecorded Broadside Documenting the Aftermath of a London Shooting [Broadside]. [Execution]. Quennell, Samuel [c.1824-d.1846]. The Trial, Sentence, And Execution of Samuel Quennell, Who was Executed at Horsemonger-lane Gaol This Morning, For the Wilful Murder of Daniel Fitzgerald. [London]: Birt, Printer, [1846]. 15" x 9-3/4" (38.2 x 25 cm) broadside, text in triple columns below headline and woodcut vignette, verse in triple columns at foot of text. Browning, light edgewear, a few faint stains and small holes (no loss to legibility), early annotation ("Jan 5. 1846.") under headline. A good copy of a rare broadside. $1,500. * Quennell was convicted of the shooting death of Daniel Fitzgerald, a murder seemingly carried out at random. (The motive may have been a negative comment to his employer.) The examination of the gun and analysis of the fired bullets were crucial to the prosecution's case. Our broadside documents Quennell's trial and execution. It was printed by one of the successors of Thomas Birt [d.1841], most likely his widow, who took over the business upon his death. (Sources disagree over her name, which was either Mary or Ann Birt.) This broadside is rare and appears to be unrecorded. No copies located on OCLC or Library Hub, or by us in institutional catalogues. OCLC locates 1 copy of a similar broadside from the same printer at Harvard Law School. Seller Inventory # 82998
