[ ABOUT THE BOOK ] Tribal Rugs: A Complete Guide to Nomadic and Village Carpets Book by James Opie | Tribal Rugs is a survey of the weaving traditions of nomadic peoples in Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey and the Caucasus. Drawing on James Opie's study of the tribes of these regions since 1970, it describes the ancient roots of tribal weaving and the development and significance of shared designs. | The book examines the Pazyryk rug, a complexly patterned piece made nearly two and a half thousand years ago and uncovered in the grave of a Scythian chieftain, and traces its links to later weavings. It follows the history of ancient and traditional designs, explaining relationships between patterns and helping readers identify them. Opie discusses the origins of tribal weaving patterns and presents the subject in an accessible way. (OS).
