A Tribute Of Respect, To The Memory Of The Hon. James Bowdoin, Esq., In A Sermon. Followed By Extract From A Discourse Of. Mr. Buckmaster's &C by Thaddeus Mason Harris is a commemorative early 19th-century sermon delivered in Dorchester (October 27, 1811) mourning the death of James Bowdoin, a prominent Massachusetts public figure. Harris presents a meditation on public virtue, wealth, philanthropy, and patriotism, arguing that true worth lies in integrity, benevolence, and steady moral conduct. The sermon outlines three principal claims on public regard: personal worth; love of the nation; and public benefaction, illustrating these ideas with Bowdoin's life, including his affability, civic service, generosity to Dorchester (a wood-lot, a town clock), and his role as a benefactor to education and the community. The volume also includes an obituary notice from Boston newspapers and an extracted concluding portion from Reverend Buckminster's discourse on Bowdoin's interment, emphasizing mortality, faith, and the example of a public-spirited life. The work collectively memorializes Bowdoin as a model citizen and Christian gentleman.
