12mo. First French edition of Parts One and Two (of four). Handsome contemporary full mottled calf; the spine with five raised bands, compartments richly decorated in gilt, and with red morocco title label lettered in gilt. Marbling to page edges. Decorative woodcut head- and tail-pieces. xxiv, 256pp.; [4], 328pp. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with wear to the corners, a little wear to the spine ends, and a very minor crack to the head of the upper joint. The contents with a single unobtrusive old worm hole to the blank upper margin of pp.1-250 of the second part are otherwise in very good order and remain clean throughout. An attractive copy of the first French edition of English author Laurence Sterne's novel 'The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman', comprising the first two parts translated by Joseph-Pierre Frénais and published in 1776 (the third and fourth parts, translated by Antoine Gilbert Griffet de Labaume, were published nine years later, in 1785).
