His intimate, detailed descriptions of the natural world and his exploration of the relationship between people and their surroundings garnered recognition as a significant contribution to Australian literature. Banfield's grave on Dunk Island is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register, marking his lasting legacy in the region. He passed away on June 2, 1923, at the age of 70, leaving behind a unique body of work focused on the tropical landscapes he loved.
