Harry Wu was born in Shanghai in 1937. The son of a wealthy banker, he was sent to an elite Jesuit boys' school before attending the Beijing Geology Institute as an undergraduate. He was arrested in 1960 and was released from prison in 1979. Six years later, he accepted an offer to be a visiting scholar at the University of California at Berkeley, and resettled in the United States. he is the author (with Carolyn Wakeman) of "Bitter Winds: A Memoir of My years in China's Gulag" and "Laogai: The Chinese Gulag".
