True Catholic and Apostolic Faith Maintained in the Church of England: to Which Is Prefixed a Sermon Preached by Him at Christ Church, Dublin, the 5Th Day of July 1674

"True Catholic And Apostolic Faith Maintained In The Church Of England: To Which Is Prefixed A Sermon Preached By Him At Christ Church, Dublin, The 5Th Day Of July 1674" by Andrew Sall. This late-17th-century polemical tract defends the Church of England as the true catholic church by surveying Catholic doctrine, councils, and authorities and arguing against image worship, invocation of saints, purgatory, indulgences, transubstantiation, and papal prerogatives. The work uses a disputational, citation-heavy method that alternates quotations with rebuttals, drawing on patristic authorities (Origen, Augustine, Chrysostom) and church councils to contrast Anglican practice with Roman teaching. It critiques Latin-only liturgy and argues for Scripture and the creeds as primary guides while defending English episcopal succession, reform, and vernacular worship. The volume situates the debate within the England–Ireland context, referencing political-religious tensions and the roles of church and state. Included sermon (delivered in Dublin) and a memoir present Sall’s conversion from Jesuit to Anglican priest as a conscience-driven argument for Anglican doctrine, inviting readers to examine claims with charity and diligence.
